Physical Rehab (Inpatient Rehab)

The CHRISTUS St. Vincent's Inpatient Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program serves adults who have physical, neurological, communicative and/or cognitive needs and who are medically stable.

This specialty field of medical care addresses various functional needs that arise from a wide range of injuries or illnesses that include:

  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Progressive neurological disorders
  • Major multiple traumatic injuries
  • Joint replacement
  • Amputation

The goal of physical medicine and rehabilitation is to help patients regain maximum functional independence and quality of life. Our physician-directed services are centered on the individual needs of the patient so that we can help each person reach their fullest potential. While we focus primarily on patients, we believe that families and caregivers play an important role in the rehabilitation process. Teaching families and caregivers how to meet the patient's ongoing care needs eases the transition from hospital to home.

Program Services:

  • Physical therapy to increase strength, endurance and mobility
  • Occupational therapy to help with activities of daily living in the home, work and community
  • Speech therapy to improve communication, cognitive skills and swallowing disorders
  • Counseling for emotional support
  • Outings to foster community reintegration and to build confidence
  • Nutrition services
  • Educational sessions

Multidisciplinary Team Includes:

  • Physiatrist/physician
  • Occupational therapist
  • Physical therapist
  • Rehabilitation coordinator
  • Rehabilitation nurses
  • Rehabilitation psychologist/counselor
  • Speech and language pathologist
  • Dietitian
  • Other specialized rehabilitative staff

Throughout the admission and discharge process, a rehabilitation coordinator serves as a patient and family liaison, facilitates progress reviews, helps with the patient's transition from our facility, and coordinates home care services.
