The Residents

Class of 2010

Ali AziziAli Azizi

When I was looking for residencies I decided that I wanted full spectrum family medicine, strong Obstetrics, and I wanted to serve the underserved. I interviewed all over the country from the West coast to the East coast. Then, a mentor of mine told me I should just close my eyes and choose with my heart. I did, and my heart led me to Santa Fe, the "city different," with its beautiful mountains, vistas, out-doors opportunities, its sophisticated art and culture, and its obsession with saving the prairie dog! And funny enough, this program has all the qualities that I had originally looked for. When I am not working or taking call, I love to hike in the mountains, run, bicycle, read, and most of all, I enjoy great conversations with friends over dinner or over coffee with a rich piece of chocolate cake.

My path to medicine has been with many side streets, diversions, ups and downs, and, honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.  My degree and background has really been my point of reference in terms of understanding health and disease, as well as helping patients improve their quality of life.  I plan on continuing into my medical practice whether here in the U.S. or abroad.  Most of my medical work abroad has been in Central America, including Guatemala and Costa Rica.  However, I have much more traveling to do, and many other countries to see.  In the interim, I like to keep it simple, spending time climbing mountains of the western states.  Once residency is over, I would like to ascend at least 6 of the 7 tallest peaks of the world.  "Wishin' and hopin.'"

Class of 2011

Carmen Barnes

Carmen Barnes

Originally from a small rural town in western Montana, Carmen Barnes moved to the "big city" of Albuquerque for her undergraduate training where she double-majored in Spanish and Biology.  At UNM she pursued research, traveled to South America and Africa, and began a love affair with international medicine.  She then when on to pursue her medical career at the Dartmouth Brown Medical Exchange program, from which she graduated in 2006.  After graduation, she ventured to Peru on a Howard Hughes grant, where she spent 2 years studying the genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum, the most deadly form of malaria.  Nostalgic for the green chili and endless blue skies typical of the Southwest, she followed her heart back to New Mexico for residency.  In her spare time she enjoys salsa dancing (at least 3 times a week), reading, traveling, and outdoor activities.

William Edwards

William Edwards

Bill Edwards graduated from the University of Nevada School of Medicine after obtaining his BA in English Literature from the University of Alaska, Anchorage.  He was born in Monroe, MI, and lived most of his life in Chicago, IL.  His medical interests lie in rural primary care, and he is considering movie back to Alaska when finished with his residency.  He and his wife, Julie, are the happy and busy parents of Maxwell Robert, their one-year-old son.  They came to New Mexico to explore its rich cultural traditions and geographic diversity.  As a family, they enjoy hiking, camping, skiing, and good food.  Bill is a musician and spent his formative years as a (hopelessly broke) recording and touring performer.  He now spends bits and pieces of free time in his home studio.

Jennifer Hartley

Jennifer Hartley

Jennifer Hartley graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine.  She received a doctorate in anthropology from Brown University, where her research focused on American women's understandings of the relationship between food and health.  She has particular interests in international medicine, ethnobotany, and the use of art in healing.  Prior to coming to New Mexico, she worked in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  She hopes to return to that region to combine medicine and anthropology in addressing the healthcare needs of women.  When not taking care of patients, she can usually be found in a kitchen somewhere, cooking and baking up a storm.
