Specialty Services

Much of the Family Medicine resident’s time will be spent on specialty services. These specialists are aware that Family Medicine residents have obligations in the Family Medicine program which require them to be absent periodically throughout the week.  To avoid scheduling difficulties and misunderstandings, each resident should contact the specialty attending before beginning that service and discuss his/her schedule with them.  On rare occasion, the program director will approve clinic schedule changes (only with sufficient notice) that will enhance the specialty experience.

Each specialty attending is asked to evaluate the resident rotating through that specialty service. It is recommended that before leaving the service the resident arrange a conference with the attending so that the resident’s performance can be discussed.

The residents will be asked to evaluate each service they are on as well as complete an annual evaluation of all attendings.  An aggregate of evaluations will be sent to the attendings evaluated.  A copy will be kept in the residency office so that other residents interested in taking the rotation can review it.

While on a specialty service the following is expected of the resident:

  1. If applicable, the resident will make morning rounds with the service, private physician, etc., to whom they are assigned.  Prior to these rounds the resident must see any of his/her continuity patients who are hospitalized on the La Familia/Hospitalist service and discuss the patient’s care with the service attending.
  2. The resident will either be at his/her assigned rotation, community project, rural clinic or at the Family Medicine Clinic every day during the week
  3. When on an elective rotation with a preceptor, and for any reason that preceptor closes his office, (i.e. vacation, conference, etc.) the resident will not take this time as “free” vacation, but will instead report to the continuity clinic to see walk-ins or request another preceptor be arranged for him/her.  Time away from a rotation or preceptorship must be approved through the residency director.
  4. Residents are expected to attend morning report at SVH on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8-8:30am.  It is understood that occasionally a resident may have to miss morning report due to patient care conflicts or rotational demands.
  5. Generally no 3rd year June out-of-town rotations are allowed.
